Moving to new build house

Hi,
Looking for information here. My wife and I have just purchased a new build house on and new estate so new post code. Post Office haven't released the the address yet so it appears so no search engines using the post code can find our address.

So the problem is I want to sort out the gas and electric supplies, I know British Gas supply gas and NPower supply electric. However British Gas can find our electric supply details but not their gas, not even when I gave them the meter point reference!

The operator I spoke to said it would take up to 3 months for all the details to appear on their system and advised for us to wait until the utility companies write to us asking for our details. Now is that right? Do I have to wait? Can I sort out my suppliers now?

Any help is appreciated,
Andy.

I know some suupliers can add your details to there database and attach your mpr to the account, I did this with eon when i moved into my new property, also you may find on the gas that there is an IGT charge due to it being on an independant gas transporter who will charge you a set fee for the upkeep of the network on your new build, But with eon i found on there energy guarentee which is guarentee to beat bg on price (apparently) for both gas and electric standard tariff they cover the cost of this in the tariff.

    Hope this helps

Just moved into a new property myself, well last 2 months. All the Gas, Water and Leccy was ready to go from day one. British Gas had a letter waiting for my in my mailbox addressed to "The occupier" which gives u details how to register, make sure u get all ur meter readings and serial numbers, so they can tally up in their database. Dont know if the situ is same for you, but obv with a new build I cant see them connecting up a new line, coz it will already be plumbed in. Dont know who your supplier is though... We got BGas and EON for leccy... Still havent heard from EON... Sure they will write and ask for monies soon... Enjoy ur new place.

Just to add, being a new build, new property etc... WAITING for bills to arrive obviously reduces hassle and outgoings, just make sure u have a reserve of what u expect to be charged for...
  • Thanks guys for the information. I have finally sorted out who the providers are, Scottish Power for both! Now I have to wait a couple of weeks to get me on the system, then I can change to a capped tariff.

    Thanks again.

No rush IMO, just enjoy settling into your new place. Wait for them to come to you. ( Would say wait for them to come knocking, but you know that would just be Baliffs)

Hi AJ, remember that by having elec with EOn and gas with Bgas you`ll be paying more as it`s generally cheaper to have both fuels with same company and Bg will be charging you a fortune in my opinion.

Correct, my Leccy is with EON and my Gas is BG, yes I appreciate BG have a reduction on saved energy, but ive just had a 2 month gas bill for £5 so cant be too bad lol

Sounds like they have esitmated your first bill lol - would ring them and give upto date meter reading and get them to re bill you, last thing you want is extra adding onto your next bill.

Mmm, can`t understand why only £5 as surely it costs more than that to heat just the water for 2 months. I would definetly check especially with the continued threat of bills going up. You don`t want to end up being underestimated now as you`ll pay for it later. I would encourage everyone to check meter readings and keep it safe for whenever they do increase.
