Running a switch from a WAP

Options
Hi,

I am looking at installing a Netgear DG834G wireless 802.11g router due to the increased flexibility available with the wireless features.

I understand that the wireless feature beams out a wireless signal around the router and when a 802.11g/b device is connected to the computer in concern, it can connect to the router and transfer information just like a normal wired Ethernet connection.

However, is it possible to use a Wireless Access Point to run a switch in a room far away from the router? i.e. Connect a WAP to the network, which receives the wireless network signal and then pumps it out to a switch on a Cat5 cable which then feeds some wired sockets.

I am looking at http://www.ebuyer.co.uk for purchasing my equipment.

Many thanks ;)

  • Hiya, I think I understand what you're trying to do - not 100% though! From what I can see...

    |Internet|<--->|Wireless Router|)))))((((((|WAP|<
    >Switch<
    >Computers

    obviously <---> is a wired connection, )))((( is a wireless connection.

    Then, Yes, it is possible with pretty much all wireless access points. Ideally what you want though is a product called a 'Wireless Bridge'. The ones I've used in the past that do this exact job, were by Linksys - model 'WET11' (have a look for other WET products, im sure they do a 54g version called a WET54 probably). This type of product is designed with EXACTLY the task you have in mind.

    FYI, I project managed a wireless network that covered a whole village :)

    Hope this helps.
