Sick of Ebay/Paypal charges - am I alone?

Hi all,

Due to currently being uber skint, I've been selling a load of stuff on ebay, including mobile phones.

Am I alone in being sick of the constant charges ebay forces upon me for listing items?

Listing Fee
Final Value Fee
Payment received to paypal fee
Bank transfer (if under £50) fee

This is all made worse by the fact ebay will no longer let you list mobile phones unless you accept paypal payment only!
Not too nice when you consider they own paypal.

Can anyone advise of other auction sites/payment sites that aren't so brutal with charges?
Seems to me ebay inc have a bit of a monopoly going on.

There are huindreds of ebay alternatives available - 121bid.com is completely free, ebid is cheap, tazbar is cheap, but the difference is that the traffic is tiny compared to eBay.

You get what you pay for I'm afraid.

eBay is far fropm a monopoly - it is not the only auction site nor is not the only online marketplace. It is dominant admittedly, but people have the choice - use it or don't use it. A monopoly would have no competition or alternative.

You could try selling the phone on Amazon Marketplace or play.com, but again you have to use their own merchant services, and overall cost is similar to using eBay.

There is a list of other auction sites and venues on the useful tips sticky thread on this forum. However the very fact you had to ask for suggestions shows you how well known these other sites are. If you didn't know about them then neither will the buyers.

Amazon is usually considered a good option though for brand new items, it isn't an auction so you'll need a fixed price and the fees are steep, but you can see exactly what is will cost you and how much you will receive before you confirm the listing. However for new users you can''t sell high end electrical items without a form of verification first.

You live in Glasgow, surely there's plenty of local buyers, try selling your goods on gumtree or just the free ads

I must have missed the reports of ebay holding a gun to your head and forcing you to use its services. :D

If you don’t like ebay and its charges, don’t use it.

There are plenty of alternative sites and other ways of selling.

As an earlier poster pointed out though, ebay is the best known and most popular.
Sure, I could try and find a car boot sale (but not likely as they are all apparently rubbish in the Glasgow area these days) or use the snips etc, but as much as I hate ebay charges and the paypal part, you do have more chance of getting a sale.

It just gets very off putting having to pay out 4 seperate charges to sell an item.
