just wear your "normal clothes" nothing fancy :)

About 2 year ago i had to sign on for about 6 weeks, during my first "sign on" the lady asked me .... hours i would work,,, field of work ..and pay... i said .. "id like £16k or above"... at this point, she laughed hysterically and shouted to her co-worker (who was the other side of the room, also interviewing!) "she wants £16k and above"... they both began to laugh and said "your not in London, il put minimum wage" ... me --> :o

    Good Luck!!

    how rude?

i'm sure some staff think that all people signing on are thick heads!!!!

some of them act like they have to pay you your measly £40 odd quid a week out of their own pockets

There's lots of pink velour tracksuits at my jobcentre and strange young chaps with vicious dogs:rolleyes:

They laugh at me when I say what I want to earn and what sort of jobs I am looking for - they don't ever have any of those kind of jobs. Mind you, I am now on New Deal for self-employment and the chap at the Chamber was so condescending - reminding me to turn up for appointments and be there early, if I was late or failed to turn up then I would be chucked off. Basically, he spoke to me as though as I was an idiot - well, I will show him, my business will be successful and he can shove it way up where the sun never shines:rotfl:

Some of the advisors at my jobcentre are nice but some are just plain incompetent.

One little tip which the Jobcentre people won't tell you about  You can ask for help with travelling expenses for when you have an interview. I asked on the off-chance when I had an interview in London and ended up with more than enough to cover my petrol costs. When I had a second interview I was less shy about asking again and they again covered my costs.

I found the staff to be quite off really when I first started signing on, I'd never claimed anything before and was made to feel like a scrounger, yeah for £60 per week, didn't even cover my mortgage

Anyway, the job panned out in London and it felt lovely when I went in for the last time to sign off. The attitude of the staff had changed as I think they could see I was genuinely wanting to work. So, I wouldn't take anything personally if they look down their nose at you and best wishes in your job-hunting ;)

^ My situation was even worse - I actually had a part-time job (12 hours a week), so I was only claiming 50p a week! :rotfl:

They still treated me like a filthy scrounger, telling me to lower my sights, even though I was literally just there to find work. And of course it only took me 6 weeks to find a job sooo much better than the ones they were advising .

Oh dear, this is turning into "complain about the Job Centre" thread, isn't it? Does make me wonder if a better run centre would save more people from claiming...

So I'm guessing if I set my ambitions pretty high then I will get kicked down again?
I'd like to set the bar for a job pretty high... will this be accepted- or will they just flat out refuse me to do that?

Just remembered something actually, when I got my second lot of travel expenses they paid me by giro. Now I'd never even seen one before never mind know what to do with it. The lady who paid me told me to go to the post office to get it cashed but warned me to be careful when I walked out. The reason being is that it's like a side-door so the local scrotes know people coming out will be clutching a giro and have been known to mug people :eek: She told me to look sad and tearful as though I'd been refused so I wouldn't be a target for them:eek: If nothing else I can look back now and laugh and think how like it was being in an episode of Shameless :rotfl::rotfl:

^ If your qualifications and experience warrant it, you'll be fine... but yes, they will try to be as "realistic" as possible and after all you are better off in "a job" than in nothing at all - nothing to stop you applying for better ones further down the line :).

I was lucky to get mine within 6 weeks - any longer and I would have had to settle for less... which I was perfectly prepared to do.
