Civil Servants and ex Civil Servants who belong to the Civil Service Motoring Association can get discounted motor and home insurance through Frizzels. Frizzels is now owned by Liverpool Victoria and act for a large portion of the CSMAs 350,000+ members.0 -
I can recommend LiverpoolVictoria. They are actually a mutual, like a Building Society (remember them??).
We use them for car insurance and have had the misfortune to claim three times in the last 2 years, but we've always been dealt with very well.
They do good things like Guaranteed no claims bonus, which means for £11odd extra a year, you will NEVER lose your bonus, no matter how many claims you have. This is better than 'protected NCB/NCD'.
Also, if you INVEST with Liverpool Victoria, you get further discounts on their insurance products.
Website is https://www.liverpoolvictoria.co.uk
Being a mutual of course means they COULD be worth a carbetbag investment*, as someone could try and take them over in the future...
*insurance doesn't count. Only investment products make you a 'member'.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
LV are a long-standing and respectable company. If the quote brings them out on top, then go for it. When I got a quote from them for house insurance, it came out really expensive, though!
LV are a Friendly Society, rather than a mutual. Don't ask me what the differences are, though. To get membership of LVFS, you have to invest in their with profits fund, the stakeholder CTF and ISA don't count as they're invested in an externally-managed OEIC. Some life insurance also qualifies for membership, if the premium is high enough. I don't know whether general insurance does. The discounts are member discounts - if you get membership by investing in the with profits fund, then further policies (whether investment or insurance) will gain some benefit.0 -
LV are superb. We have car and house insurance. One year OH fell through ceiling  (up in loft and I told him the rugby final was starting! He jumped up ....) :rotfl: next thing his legs are dangling through a large hole.
Lady at LV was excellent after she got up from the floor - they sent a builder round that evening (ceiling happened at 5pm ish) the builder came at 9pm (although they did ask if it was ok) and put some temporary covering up to save the draft. Then next morning came around to arrange when work was to start. Within 4 days work was done, ceiling completely replastered all over to make whole ceiling look same. No bills to pay as LV paid direct. They have a contract with building companies and send their own workmen out. Got a call about a week after job finished to check that builders had done job properly and that we were fully satisified. Cannot recommend them enough. AND the policy was miles cheaper than anyone else. :T0 -
Thanks everyone! :beer:0

*whispers* also LV almost always pay claims - about the easyest firm to get them settled with.if it's more than 10 stone, and that hairy, it's probably not a dog...it may be a wookie.0
