You could look at it another way, maybe before the update all the other firewalls had a a whopping big holes in them, which only ZA blocked, and that when MS fixed the bug and started using those ports ZA was blocking then it blocked ZA users internet access?

All personal firewalls on Windows XP based systems are pretty much a waste of resources due to the flakey way XP handles privilages and access anyway.

I rebooted and it did it again, blank screen, I rebooted into recovery again, but as before I did nothing I just typed exit at the 'windows :>' prompt.
I Rebooted into normal windows and all seems OK again.

Does that mean it had done a recovery before I typed exit?
It did not seem to do anything, I have never one into recovery mode before so
I don't know what to expect.

OK I unchecked the 'load ZA at start up' box and it rebooted OK.

I am leaving well alone for the time being.

So now simply invoke Zone Alarm manually - Start, Programs, Zone Labs etc.

I rebooted again without doing anything, so I have uninstalled it complely now.
    Rebooted OK.

Gonna reboot again to make sure.

Well I would ignore the following comment posted above, and re-install again ASAP. Any firewalls effectiveness can be checked at Shieldsup.

OK I finally installed ZA and rebooted OK twice so it seems all is well now.
Also had it tested at ShieldsUp too and all is fine.
Hope that's the end of it!
I have always liked ZA, it must have been a rush for them to get the fix out.

My ZA and internet work in harmony now but I still get pop up windows - finance and credit stuff. I also noticed that my laptop became slower after last night and makes me wonder what has 'moved in' the system. What could i do to first stop pop ups and second to make sure that 'unwanted visitors' go away.

    Thanks

Download and run a scan with Ad-Aware and SpyBot:

Don't forget to update each program before you do a scan with it.

I'd also run a scan with whatever anti-virus app you're using.
