My friend has the above problem and has asked me to sort it out for him. I know a bit about computers but have got stuck with this one. The error mesage he's getting is something like this - ' verification failed for -
' c:\\windows\system32\zonelabs\vsvault.dll '
There is then a blue screen with the stop code 0x00000021.
So anyway, so far I've tried starting in safe mode, in last know good configuration, and then an in-situ repair with the windows xp disk, all to no avail.
My next plan is to try and copy the above file from my computer onto his and this is where I've got stumped. I tried using Knoppix 5.1.1 - the disc based Linux OS, but I don't think you can write to the hard drive with this, only read from it. I've got Hiren's utilities disk as well but couldn't see anything on there that could write to an NTFS hard drive.
Does anyone know of any XP freeware bootable disk utilities that have USB support and allow you to write to NTFS disks(not much to ask!!)? Cheers in advance. Or is there an easier way to do this?
ps if repairing the file doesn't work, I'll just use Knoppix to recover all his files and do a clean install.

Isn't this a file for a Zonelabs product?
Has he tried booting into safe mode and removing/reinstalling it?0 -
It is a zonealarm file and I tried rebooting in safe mode but the same error message appeared.0

This is what Microsoft suggest:

Probably nothing you didn't already know.
ASAIK, Knoppix now writes to NTFS partitions.0 -

I have a Ubuntu installation and it can write to a NTFS drive, I know because it
is installed on a NTFS drive, it's called a Wubi installation. I used it to copy (back up windows). Windows was on c: Ubuntu was on F: So I copied from C to F.
I also copied stuff the other way.
You can run ubuntu fron a CD too but it is just as easy to install it on your drive.
At what stage do you get this message?
You might be as well to get ubuntu anyway, I believe it is the most popular,,and hence one might believe, best Linux system?0 -
From searching on the web it looks like knoppix can corrupt the ntfs file structure when you try to write to an ntfs drive.
I'll give Ubuntu a go - it looks like it uses a ntfs-3g driver which is meant to emulate the way in which windows writes to ntfs and is apparently completely stable! Cheers for the advice.
Ps I get the message at about the time the desktop would normally appear, so I'd have to make a bootable ubuntu disk on another computer and use that.0 -
Actually it would probably be easier to put his drive into you machine as a slave
and then copy it across.0
