help needed in getting a home phone line

I have recently moved home which has a talktalk phone line. When i moved in there was a restriction on the line and now it has been disconnected. I phoned them up in order to reconnect (in my name) and I get different answers:
1- said that i needed to contact the previous account holder to get the phone reconnected
2- said i needed to contact BT to reconnect the phone and THEN get back to them -- BT then said i needed to pay £125!
I dont care which service provider I am with as I am only in the property for 6 months or so. Its seems madness that a property that clearly HAS a line needs £125 spent on it to get said line working again.
Any suggestions would be MOST welcome
Thanks

Talk Talk could reconnect the line (new customer) if they wanted to but choose to cherry pick BT Customers. However if you were with Talk Talk before at your previous address they should be able to provide you with service as a moving customer.
Whatever happens your going to have pay someone a connection fee if the line has been disconnected between the exchange and your house. If however the line has only been stopped and just needs restarting http://www.thephone.coop/residential/linerental.html will set it up and give you a short term contract.0 -

That's great thanks! I cannot imagine why on earth talktalk would physically disconnect the line, but i have been told that the # is not on the BT network so both BT and postoffice are quoting the higher reconnection charge... and talktalk refuses to help. It really is unethical what they have done (unbundle the line then disconnect and refuse to take responsibility for it even if new customer wishes to remain with them!)0 -
oh, what's an LLU line?0

update I managed to get the 29.99 offer with BT, but had to decline since it tied me into an 18 mnth contract, and if i move to place which is connected to another exchange would have to disconnect and start a new contract thus incurring a pretty major charge

thought the thing is that moving from talktalk should only cost 40 (transferring from an LLU line). However, for no reason whatsover, and through no fault of mjy own talktalk physically disconnected the line! Which is what encumbered me with a massive reconnection charge. This seems 'wrong' somehow and I was wondering who I could contact for expert advice on this matter?
Thanks
