Debit card limits abroad
cookster
Hi,
I'm a long time lurker, first time poster
Going to the states on Saturday armed with a Nationwide debit card (thanks to this forum). I've never used a debit card abroad before, usually take travellers cheques and wondered if the same limits apply abroad? I.E. £300 a day limit on withdrawals etc.
Many thanks in advance!!

will probally eb the same , I got caught out once in Spain when I withdrew money on last day then decided to buy some other stuff and went to withdraw more and woudl not let me as had already withdrawn most of my £300 in Euros already, luckily was able to use my debit card instead. If in doubt give your bank a ring anyway to to let them know you are going abroad as well.TOTAL 44 weeks lose. 6st 9.5lb :T0

Nationwide apply the same limit but the local cash machines may have a lower one.0

You do indeed need to be careful of not falling foul of local limits. I had checked with Nationwide and was quoted the £300 daily limit, but found that cash machines in Spain wouldn't necessarily dispense this much. We were also badly caught out in Italy where very few of the main banks accepted Visa at all! And a taxidriver told us that there were strict limits to daily withdrawals, and that some banks even operated a monthly limit (he quoted 1500 euros - not that much!). The answer is (a) check beforehand which banks operate which systems; (b) inform your own bank of your impending trip; and (c) always have a second or even third card available in case a machine swallows one on you.0
