Be careful of MBNA 0%

Has anyone else found that when they transfered to MBNA 0% the direct debit was not set up, or takes 6 weeks to be set up? This makes the first payment late so you then get charged a late fee and charged interest at 29%.
This happened to me and although they refunded the late fee they said that it was my fault as I had been told it would take 6 weeks for the direct debit to be active. I had not and also why would it take 6 weeks to set up.
I then find that someone I know, who transfered a balance to MBNA, found himself on 29% interest when MBNA moved his payment day forward 10 days so that there were not enough funds in his account. It was on his statement when the next payment was due but nothing to draw his attention to it.
Looking on the internet there seems to be a problem with MBNA and direct debits.

  • Whenever you do a BT, make sure you make the 1st payment manually, while your DD is being set up. I think it's 4 weeks to set up a DD, never heard of it taking 6 weeks.

Check your statement carefully, if there's something on your statement that's not the norm, you should take it as notice that there's been a change. You'd also get letters from MBNA advising you of changes in t&cs. You won't be the first person to just trash the letters without reading them, dismissing them as junk ... but just remember, you WERE notified. Any arguments that the t&cs were not made clear to you just doesn't wash...you can't expect MBNA to hold your hand and read the t&cs to you - it's your own responsibility.

My general rule of thumb is to make the payments manually myself until I:

    a) Receive a letter from the card issuer saying my DD has been set up
    b) My statement states on it that payment will be taken by DD
