Disgusting behavour by Debenhams!! All store card holders read!

I thought I better bring to everyone attention the disgusting behaviour of Debenhams (who's store card is run my G E Capital I think).

I have a store card with debenhams and each month I receive a letter with my statement in it, I read the statement the letter that comes in the envelope. Also during the month I receive rubbish letter from debenhams trying to get me to sign up for a loan from them. These letter are immediately thrown in the bin.

Anyway yesterday a letter from debenhams turned up saying - 'Here is your PIN number for your Debenhams CREDIT CARD'.

WELL....I have never applied for a credit card with debenhams, so I immediately rang them up. And it seems I was sent a letter from them awhile ago telling me I can have a debenhams credit card and to get this card - all I need to do was NOTHING! But if I didn't want the card I have to ring a telephone number and tell them that I didn't want the card.

Well I am totally disgusted with this - surely your not allowed to just send someone a credit card without me having to sign anything. Wouldn't it better to have sent me a letter saying I can get a credit card and if I want it just ring up.

I can't tell you how annoyed I am at this. I asked on the phone and this letter tell me about the card was sent separately and not with my monthly statement - which I would have expected such important information to be sent. I told Customer Services on the phone that I am constantly getting advertisements from you trying to sell stuff and letter get ripped up and sent in the bin - so I can only assumed this letter looked like a selling letter.

Quite correct - and they got their knuckles wrapped for it as well (warning them to be more careful in the future).

It was featured on BBC2's Working Lunch, amongst others. Tsar76 - maybe you could contact them about Debenhams.
  • AFAICR, M&S just sent the credit cards out to everybody without informing them first and this is why they got told off.

Debenhams did send out a letter a month ago (seperate from the statement) stating that people would be moved to their credit card unless they rang and requested not to be. If people throw away letters from companies that they already do business with without first checking that it is junk mail, they only have themselves to blame. You have already signed a credit agreement for your store card and as long as they just replace the card (not give you an additional one) that is OK.

To be honest, I think the new Debenhams credit card it much better than the store card, in any case. You get all the store card benefits plus cashback so I do not know why anybody would want to keep the store card.
