Lost sound

The sound has completely gone from my computer.
I have an Intel Pentium 4 1.9Ghz with 512memory a built in sound card:
SoundMAX Digital audio
I use XP sp2
I've tried sorting things out in control panel but whatever I do I get the message "Digital audio is taken by another application" but what application? I cant seem to get round it
Can anyone help?

    Answer here may be.

    Two computers I've had to repair of late, both with onboard sound, and both had no sound.
    The east's solution was to buy a cheap sound card (£15), problem solved.
    I find Viagra saves peeing on my shoe.....
