Driving in France? new regulations

I saw this in yesterday's paper and thought it worthy of mentioning as it has received very little publicity in the UK.

Since 01 July a new law has come into force meaning that anyone driving in France must be in possession of a fluorescent jacket to be worn in the case of an emergency.

Police appear to be stopping unsuspecting drivers for other minor offences and then issuing on the spot fines if the driver does not have the required jacket in their car.
