Poor Credit History

Hi guys,

I'm a victim of poor credit which I think is mainly due to the fact I've moved around a lot in the past and never got a credit card as a student.

I've now bought a property but had to get a stupidly high interest mortgage with GMAC which I want to change to a hopefully better 'high street' rate when it gets renewed in Sep 2009.

I've been in the property since Sep 07 (about 10 months) and registered on the electoral role from Oct 07. I've made sure I've put all the bills in my name and got a landline phone too.

Having checked my credit files back in Dec 06 none of them showed adverse credit (just a lack of it) although there were quite a few searches where I had tried to get credit cards.

Anyway, having checked annaul credit report recently I see that the last search made on my file was Feb 07 and it shows that I've mad all my mortgage payments on time (although I went overdrawn on my current account once!). My questions are:

1. Is it sfae to apply for a credit card now or should I wait until I have been on the electoral role for a year?

2. Which card is easiest to get? (Bearing in mind I only want it to build up credit and will have no issue paying it off in full so I don't care about the rate as such - should I try normal cards or go for a high interest one because it may be easier to get?)

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me! ;)

    1. You should be fine. I'm not even on the electoral roll but have several main stream cards.
    2. Try applying for a card from the bank you have your main current account with. If they won't give you a card, apply for a Capital One Classic, Barclays Initial or Halifax standard card.

Have a look at this thread:

  • Thanks mate, I've just applied for a Capital One Classic card but I have to wait for them to confirm via post. Fingers crossed! :)
