  • Absolutely right, that's why I said "I've been upset with Abbey in the past"

I was referring to the Santander ability to manage banks, from a profit point of view, comparing A&L and Abbey's results over the last 12 months.:A

Sell now. If this deal falls through or is referred to the competion authorities you'll be lucky to get a pound for these shares.

Well - some of our savings are with Bradford and Bingley, and our Mortgage with A&L.

Whose next that I have a financial 'interest' in?

Oh, I did even better that that - Current Account, A&L, savings, B&B and mortgage - Northern Rock..

Only one left is an ISA with LV - watch this space, you heard it here first lol...:rotfl:

I have the free shares in B&B and A&L - I'm not selling. Who knows in ten years time they could be well up again.

tellmeitsfriday - I've just realised - I've got an ISA with LV as well!!!
I'm stressed enough over this - please don't add to it.

Yes and in 6 months time they could be worthless. A&L can't go back up again anyway. They were £12 a while ago, the recent bid was for about £3, that's as good as it's ever going to get.

There seems to be quite a few rough comments against Abbey and "the Spaniards". I've been upset with Abbey in the past, but Santander is one of the top banks in Europe and in the UK we have seen Northern Rock and so on. Allow me to doubt about the British banking skills.

If some people prefer A&L to stay in the "expert" current hands, so be it. The bank is so ""well managed" that it would have become a second Northern Rock (or a third one after B&B). So, A&L wasn't that good and Abbey, according to its growing customer base and profits, isn't doing that bad.

Diana Wright of The Sunday Times Question of Money has said she gets more complaints about Abbey National than from any other financial institution.

Surely the 8.5% account is a monthly saver which works out much less than this at the end of the year. You need to split the amount you are saving to ensure the maximum in one account is not more than £35K. I am using Kaupthing Edge at the moment and have gone for monthly interest. They are signed up to the FSA rules. At the beginning of the forums Martin has an article on the best savings accounts. The following all have instant access and pay over 6%, B & B, A & L and Capital One.
