Vacuum cleaners

My ancient vacuum cleaner burst into flames yesterday!! It used to be my mums and I got it when she replaced it about 5 years ago, so I guess it was just it's time.

I need a new one pretty soon, freecycle and local ads aren't providing any second hand at the minute so I think I'm going to have to buy new :( anyone got any tips on choosing vacuum cleaners from an energy efficiency & moneysaving point of view???

Thanks in advance!

  • Sorry to hear your vacuum has died.

When I looked for a new one last time, I chose a bag less one. This will save having to buy bags. Some vacuums now have filters in some these need to be replaced in others the can be washed.

One consideration is going to be check the wattage, the higher the wattage the more electricity will be used, but you also need a powerful enough vacuum to do the job.

I hope you find what you need.

I'm not sure there are any vacuum cleaners that are more efficient than others.

However, while it might seem like a very good idea, I would advise against buying a bagless vacuum cleaner. My experience with them has been very bad. The worst one we owned was a dyson.

They work great at first, certainly better than a bag cleaner, I was very impressed for about 6 months, but they age badly and quickly. We've had the same issues with all of them as they got older (over 12 months), bad odours, lots of dust going in to the air when using them, expensive filters that block up very quickly, and they all lost a lot of their power. No amount of cleaning them out and changing filters improved these problems.

I also hated the "bucket of filth" as we called it, where the dust collects. Just opening the thing caused dust to go everywhere, and emptying it out was worse. I had to take the whole vacuum cleaner outside to empty it because it was so messy, but then you have to deal with the wind blowing it everywhere. It didn't help that often the dust would stick inside the bucket and you'd have to scrape it out or worse bang it on something. If you've ever had a paper bag rip or burst in your vacuum cleaner, then you know what to expect every time you empty a bagless vacuum cleaner. I was very happy to go back to paper bags, it's so much cleaner.

I know a lot of people love their bagless cleaners, but I think they're terrible. It was an expensive mistake for us, I'm now back to using our original 1970s electrolux, and the dyson is filling up a landfill somewhere. Honestly however, I wouldn't swap my dented, 30 year old avocardo green electrolux for a lifetime supply of dyson or any other bagless cleaner.

I've had so many vaccum cleaners in the last few years I've lost count, Hoover, Dyson, Panasonic etc. best one is a Henry. I wouldn't buy anything else now, but hopefully I won't have to for another few years.

I've got one of these! It's fantastic, to use during the week it's nearly as good as vaccing!

    I've got this Vax too

I'm very pleased with it, it's got zillions of tools.
But I didn't pay £140 for it, I got it off EBay for about £50 inc delivery with 12 months warranty. I think it's a catalogue return but it's perfect.
There's a 'volume control' knob on it so you can have it full blast for carpets and a bit lower for the walls and curtains.

I have one too, and it's well over 12 years old. Previous to this we had one for decades, well two. But we always referred to it as the "bex bissell". I only bought a new one because her solicitor was sharper than mine!

She also got the Hoover Junior, which was bought by my parent in the fifties and in 1997 was still the best vacuum cleaner around.

we got ours the other day and bar one (very) small scuff mark it looked brand new. It cleans really well and has the added bonus of the lift off part for cleaning the stairs.

it also comes with a 1 year warranty so for £40 i think thats pretty good value.

i worked on the idea that if it turned up and it looked a wreck or was rubbish at cleaning then i would send it back and have lost nothing.

    However its going nowhere :)
