Same question.bargain_hunter77 wrote: »Hi - Sorry if I've posted on the wrong thread, but I do hope somebody can help me.
I upgraded to AVG 8 a couple of months ago - all seemed fine, however I've now encountered problems - with updates!!!! - sometimes it doesn't update and then when it does it keeps asking me to restart the computer - is anyone else having similar probs???
Which free Anti-virus would you guys recommend?? THANKS FOR ANY HELP!X
Permanently experiencing same problems so am now looking for a free alternative.
AVAST seems mentioned a lot but could only find a free 30 day trial.
Also should AVG be removed before installing the alternative?

Always remove the old tool first and avast is free once registered, don't register and you only get 30 days. They send you an avtivation key in the email.
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.htmlavast! antivirus Home Edition is FREE to use but it is necessary to register before the end of the initial 60 day trial period. To register, click here. Following registration you will receive by E-mail a license key valid for a period of 1 year. After you have downloaded and installed the program, the license key must be inserted into it within 60 days. The registration process is very easy, and it will take you only a couple of minutes.0 -

Avira AntiVir is also another good free AV. It has very good detection rates and is quite light on resources.

same here.
What i did in the end was download avg 8 to a folder on my pc.
came off line, uninstalled avg 7 then re installed avg8.
went back online did the up dates and its been fine ever since.
Sometimes when you install an updated version of something, in the uninstalling of the old version little bits get behind and these can sometimes conflict.
Hope this helps.Happiness is not having what you want...but wanting what you have!!!0 -
You have to re-register.Charlie0
