    My father in law also died of emphysema some years ago but treatment options and expectations have improved tremendously in the last few years although you sometimes need to be quite assertive to access these. The most beneficial thing my husband has had is a programme of pulmonary rehabilitation which encourages exercise and educates patients in the condition. In my FIL's day he was encouraged to be very sedentary and not get out of breath whereas nowadays the more exercise the better as the muscles use the limited oxygen better.

    The website https://www.copd-international.com has been an absolute lifesaver for us and is a mine of information and support, although a bit American at times. All the best.
