thanks for your help. my father in law was also very ill with emphasema and actually died a few years ago so we saw how badly he was affected and how he too needed to give up work because of how he was affected, thanks for offer of advice too
My father in law also died of emphysema some years ago but treatment options and expectations have improved tremendously in the last few years although you sometimes need to be quite assertive to access these. The most beneficial thing my husband has had is a programme of pulmonary rehabilitation which encourages exercise and educates patients in the condition. In my FIL's day he was encouraged to be very sedentary and not get out of breath whereas nowadays the more exercise the better as the muscles use the limited oxygen better.
