Which paint to use - Please help!

Hi Everyone

Excuse the ramble but I felt it was needed to provide all the detail…

I would really appreciate some advice on the kind of paint that I need to use in my hallway. In a previous life the hallway and stairs had been wallpapered. Unfortunately I came along and stripped off the wallpaper. When I did this, I encountered some patches of wallpaper lining which I could not get rid of (patience is very small on DIY matters? I sanded these down to what I thought was level but in reality was a very poor job. Anyway I painted the walls with a magnolia emulsion. The result was so so. If you looked at the walls side on, it was like looking at a map. That was some years ago and I have lived with it. Now to the present. I had seen something advertised on TV called polycell smooth over. I thought that this would cover the multitude of my sins – I was wrong and this stuff is useless. I have taken it back. Now I just want to paint my walls and for it to look good. I also want to be able to be flexible with colour as I know that textured paints only seem to come on white. Is it a case of white textured paint and then the colour of my choice?

Thank you for getting to the end and any advice would be greatly appreciated

Phil
