I had an ADT alarm fitted and the monthly fee covers all servicing and alarm monitoring. I never had any problem with them. However, you do not own the kit!

Everest do a wire free system that you do own. They are not cheap, but they are good. They tie you in for a certain length of monitoring, but, at the end of the contract you can see if you can get cheaper monitoring elsewhere. Their price includes changing the batteries in the sender units. They also have a live alarm outside where ADT do not.

Your insurance will drop a fraction if you have an alarm, although it doesn't drop any more for having a monitored system.

Your local Crime Prevention Officer will give advice for free but will not recommend any specific product.
