Is your firewall blocking these programs? With my firewall I have to tell it to give new programs internet access. Might be with having a look at the firewall settings.

I use zone alarm and it always lets me know which program or service wants access and gives me options,so i dont think its a firewall problem.

Have a double check on the Zonealarm settings, maybe Outlook Express is set as default. Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird are seperate so there's no need to remove Mozilla. Did you actually set up the email accounts on Thunderbird? You have to tell it the pop & smtp settings eg. pop.virgin.net (or whatever your provider is). On Thunderbird go to Tools/Account settings.
