What Is The Difference Between The Dyslexia & Disability Support Teams?

I went to a college interview/assessment thing on Friday. After the computer assessment, everyone had to talk to the course leader. Anyway, he asked me some random questions and went through some forms I'd given the college before. At the end, I asked if it was possible for me to have a yellow filter because black on yellow is easier to read than black on white. He said this is fine and that I may have to pay a deposit.

I do not have dyslexia, but my need are similar and have been referred to their team at college. What is the difference between them & the disability support teams?

I'm now slightly concerned that if I'm referred to them, I may not get the help I need and will be in the same situation as I was last year. (with not getting the apporpriate help & support I need)

  • I would guess that the dyslexia support team deal just with learning difficulties and the disability support team deal with deafness/mobility etc. It is probable that the dyslexia team is just a specific branch of this and will probably be well placed to help you. If in doubt you can ask them when you meet them.

If you are found to be dyslexic, you may be eligible for help & assistance such as Disabled Student Allowance, but you will probably have to undergo a full assessment first.

I'm not being tested. The doctors and college know what's wrong with me.

I'm guessing you need the filters because of Irlens Syndrome (aka Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome). If that's the case then the Dyslexia Service probably has plenty of experience dealing with it as some students with dyslexia also have SSS. As Floss2 mentioned, you might need to get the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) to pay for these unless the college has some that they could loan to you (the DSA only applies to higher education). Here's a link to the application form:
