    Wise move. :)

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Life saver if you happen (like us) to have an office where sometimes the power can go a little funny and also happen to be an IT company!

Make sure you get a good one though, replaced all our Belkin ones with APC models - more expensive but at least they actually WORK!

I use an APC Smart-UPS 750. Being retired and spending more time at home these days, my computer tends to get left on all day. The UPS has saved my setup on several occasions when either voltage surges or total power cuts have occurred. I wouldn't be without it.

I've had a Smart-UPS 1000 for three years or so. Like Oblivion, it has saved me on a couple of occasions, and I would not be without it.

Mine was a refurb from ebay, in mint condition with a new battery fitted. Can't remember the cost, but less than £100. It has paid for itself in saving me from lost work and corrupted files.

EDIT: Hmm, three years... better run a battery calibration!

I'll second that. APC are the ones to go for.

Motion carried! Always used APC at home and at work, never had a problem with them.
  • no idea what kind we have at work, but if the power goes (usually when some 'tard contractors chop through a main cable for the town - you'd be amazed how often they do it!!)

Ours kicks in for the entire office and keeps 300+ people working for that fraction of a second until the great big diesel generator kicks in outside and keeps the building running for days...Its the size of a large transit van!!

    Get a diesel geny! lol

Yeah; we've got a generator, too. A Honda petrol-driven job. But that's for keeping the fridge freezer going, the central heating pumps running and the kitchen lit during a prolonged power cut!

I certainly concur with the advice to go with APC for UPSs. :money:

our place had something like that happen (we were only a small company but our servers needed to be up as close to 24/7 as possible! we had 3 APC ups's on our server (kept things going for 30 mins, plus one of those 1400w Generators you can pick up at B&Q :) the 30 min time was for some poor bloke (usually me) to jump in a company car race to the nerest Garage. fill up a few gerry cans of Unleaded ;) and get back to the genarator before the UPS's give up :D lol

Obviously very apt we've been discussing these recently!

We had a power cut this morning, and my UPS battery had died on the PC! Arrrgh, made me realise just how much I rely on it.

Luckily not too expensive to replace, from this company: https://www.mdsbattery.co.uk

So £20 should be ok for another 5-6 years, much cheaper than buying a new UPS!

Well I'm glad to be the instigator of the hand of fate for you (spooky!). :rotfl:

Have to say I when I started this thread I expected maybe one or two gadget freaks who use a UPS, I've been quite surprised that so many use them considering how many people don't even think of surge protection, never mind battery backup. I'm definitely now going to seriously consider it. Not sure on the time scale though. I'm still undecided on pc components yet (although my options are bound to change anyway with wonderful shiny pretty new components introduced by the time I've saved up). :D
