2009 Holidays

My wife and I were talking this morning about booking a holiday for 2009 (probably the Easter or Summer school holidays) and my theory was that in the current economic climate there is likely to be deep discounting of pricing to be had by leaving the booking until next year. The reason being that luxury items such as holidays are one of the first things to be cut in people's budgets during economic turbulence.

Anybody like to comment on this view? I'm pretty sure that this'll be the case, but we are limited to school holidays only and I won't be flavour of the month if I get it wrong and there's nothing left when we get around to booking it next year!

Suggest you look at availability of a similar holiday for 2008.
You'll be surprised that some are still available if your flexible re dates / exact location even in the school hols

I can't see there being big discounting next year. Now the number of big tour operators is cut , they will cut supply to keep prices high, like they have done this year. There is always strong demand in the school holidays.
Look at this year. There is limited choice booking now for departing in the next six weeks and prices are high ( much higher than last year).

It depends how fussy you are on where you want to go.

Cheapest way would be to book a flight as soon as they become available ( from one of the budget airlines). This is when the prices ar lowest. Then book you accomodation when ever you like.
  • Yep, interesting idea about booking the flights early and the accommodation later. I'll look into that - seems to make a lot of sense.

I think you're likely to be out of favour if you get this wrong! You might be lucky but it seems to me that the only people consistently lucky in the holiday stakes are those without families. School holidays will always be popular so less likely to get really good offers.
