Baby formula in cartons through Manchester security

My daughter will be travelling to New Zealand soon via Manchester airport with a 5 month old baby. The milk formulas for the baby that she uses come in 250 ml cartons which is over the 100 ml limit for liquids. She has been told that she can take the cartons but will be asked to open each one at Manchester security to prove it's baby milk. On a short flight this is probably OK, but with such a long flight which requires a number of cartons this is simply not practicable as once opened these formulas have to be used immediately or be refrigerated. Is there any way that you can pre-arrange to have these passed through security without opening them. We all understand the need for security but surely a little bit of commensense should prevail.

HAs your daughter tried contacting the airport or the airline, surely they should be able to offer guidance?

Other option is to call the Boots at the airport in departures - see if they sell the formula - in this case she could buy it once through?

This advise may not be helpful but had a similar predicament for our hoiday. Our only solution was to take the powder based milk of which you can take as much as you like. WE then had bottles pre-filled with the right amount of water which they made us taste at security.

If the baby can't take the powder milk, you may need to contact the airport as already suggested.

Bear in mind that depnding on how long the baby will be out in NZ for, will you be able to take enough of the carton based milk? If you are planning on buying milk hile out there, bear in mind that they will probably have different brands which might taste different and the baby might not like it.

We flew through Manchester in May.

I didn't take any baby food or milk in the hand luggage and then bought it from Boots airside once we were through security. There was a good selection of milks and food, but she could ring first to check they sell the brand she uses.
Here I go again on my own....
  • Many thanks. The Boots airside suggestion seems to be the best idea and we'll phone first to make sure they stock the required brand.
