choosing a hard drive

To put it simply...
If the time it takes to copy the Video file from the External Drive to the PC is "LESS THAN" the movie's length. then the External drive will stream the movie fine
and
As for programs! well most are loaded into memory when the program is started, so only the inital start up of the software will be greatly effected.

I get what you're saying. I'm the mirror to what you're suggesting.....
My Internal Windows drive on my desktop (RIP!
) ended up my main external USB Drive for my Linux install.
But if you are anything like me (and have a half dozen HDD laying around )
:D
it's best to get a empty Drive unit and stick in HDD's as required. But I did start off with a working WD MyBook 250Gb which i still use..
I am not even sure you need to bother with an enclosure, I am pretty niffty at swopping hard drives, I used to do it to transfer data between PC's.
If I ever need to back up the whole of my 250gig slave drive I think I will make it
bootable (already is in Ubuntu) and put the 500gig in as a slave to do the copy.
It should more than half the time, but I am not too keen on tinkering with it
yet as it is only a few days old. I would leave it as USB for less significant ammounts. I would also have to sure what I was doing was viable.0 -
@esbo
I'd do that but i'm on a laptop with a dodgy HDD connector! So i try and not remove the internal drive as much as possible

You might find one of THESE handy. Only £11, including shipping.
I have long used one of THESE.

Very smart - but it can't take IDE/PATA.
It's good to be able to transfer data from old IDE/PATA drives.
Would be useful if used in conjunction with the first device I linked, though.
I've just bought one of the latter, incidentally. It will be handy for transferring data directly from one loose drive to another through a USB2 hub.
