Money paid into the wrong account

Hello all, I hope that this question is in the right place.

A collegue at work managed to pay some money, by BACS into a different bank account that it was intended for.
Somehow the sort code was incorrect by one diget.
He has contacted the company bank who are not really being helpful to say the least.
So, how can he find out where the money has gone to?

Thanks S.B

The only place he can really go is the bank it was paid to who should contact the recipient, I would imagine, and confirm if this payment is correct.
  • If he has been lucky that it is not the correct account then the money should be returned to the account where it has come from. When was it sent?
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

If he phones up his bank, they should be able to tell him the account number and sortcode that the funds have gone into.

The money was sent early June.
The bank was contacted but not really helpful.
We have written a letter about two weeks ago, but so far had no reply.
    What now, sit and wait?

    Nationwide Building Society.

I will have to ask my collegue the sort code discreetly because I don't want him to think that I am intruding.

Is there anywhere that I can contact that will tell me exactly which branch this sort code belongs to?

we had this problem at work once.

the sort code that it was mistakenly sent to was in existance but the bank account no. will not correspond to the bank it was sent to. This was then rejected and sent back to the original bank. The money will be in the banks (his banks) suspense account) tell him to keep pushing the bank. even if you got the sort code of the bank, they would not talk to you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

She needs to contact the receiving bank and ask them to contact the account holder (if there is one) to arrange a refund.

Its very much in her court to try to get the money back, if its in the banks "suspense" account (eg. the account number was not in existence) it will be easier as once she tells them they can identify that it did come from her and that will be easier than convincing the mistaken recipient to give the money up.
