Hi Nev..yes most people gave up home brewing years ago..The irony is that just as people were stopping doing it the quality of the kits available improved dramatically especially the technology of the yeasts used..
I would only go for the premium kits that start at around £15... I've brewed some of the woodfordes kits and the Muntons Premium kits and given into my friends and they have been gobsmacked that it is home brewed..especially as they tucked into their 3rd pint! ;D
Also in blind tasting (not as in blind drunk) a load of real ale buffs have thought they are drinking a commercial beer
I have nothing to do with them but these are the people that do the kits

Brew some now and have a load ready for some christmas cheer!The Early bird may catch the worm ...but its the second mouse that gets all the cheese!0 -
For anyone thinking about taking up this craft again, I recommend a look at http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/. This is a specialist shop in Farnborough, Hants - my brother used to live a couple of blocks away - and they have a wide range of individual ingredients as well as kits. After you've made up a few kits, have a look at the simple elements that make up beer and you'll find it surprisingly easy to become a 'born again' real-ale homebrewer.Mike;

Check out the sale corners in Sainsbury's at the moment. I got some bottles the other day, also popped in today and got half price bottle of Jura single malt whisky and a half price bottle of wine. You have to hunt about for it and make sure the price reduction goes through at the checkout.0

Aldis are doing 20 x 330ml bottles of Stella for £9.99. Also have deals on red/white wine and various spirits. Don't be put off by "non" brand names. Their equivalent of Baileys is delish.0

Forgot to mention, also check out cash n carrys. Booker do good deals and sometimes have one week specials. Can get in on day passes as well though may have to pay cash but not 100% sure on that. If anyone has a Costco card or Makro can get good deals there.0

Taste even better if you have frosted you glass in the fridge for a couple of hour prior to drinking
