Is there anyone here on a PTA? Does your school still do some fundraising themselves?

A few parents formed a PTA with 2 or 3 teachers (including the headteacher) about a month ago.

Although they dropped us in the deep-end with the summer fayre (which was yesterday) we beat their highest total ever despite miserable weather :T :D

The thing is they are still doing their own fund-raising events and these seems totally bizarre to me - or do other schools do this too ???

i know at my old school, the PTA did do it all themselves - but there were a lot of parents involved so the jobs were split up between a lot of people. i know staff were involved, as were the governors, but i don't know the official relationship between staff, PTA and governors.

Our PTA sorts out all fund raising events for the school; they do not do any independently of us, unless they are raising funds for another charity.

I have been on the PTA for 6 years and in all that time it has not been any different. Perhaps as your PTA is newly established, these events that the school is running independently of you were arranged previously?

If you want any ideas for fund raising events, please feel free to pm me and I can share with you the sorts of things we have done at our school.

I hadn't thought of that Waggys but I'm pretty sure they've told another PTA member that they are still going to do their own fund-raising
The head has also said that we need to inform her if we plan any large scale appeals but doesn't seem to think that she needs to inform us so that we're not planning events that coincide  despite the fact it is a small school and alot of the parents have low incomes so can't afford to keep attending numerous events

Thank you for the offer of help Waggys - I'm off to pm you now ;)

The official line is that the head has to know of any events or appeals in the name of her school, as she is ultimately responsible. Conversely, she doesn't need to discuss any decisions she makes with the PTA.

Though for the reasons you give re. parents forking out constantly, it does make sense to co-ordinate activities. And she needs to work with the PTA if it is going to be successful. Good luck.

Whatever the school's fundraising is for, I'd say it was basic common sense for the PTA and the school each to let the other know what is being planned. And in a friendly way I would let the head know that if she wanted to keep me ON the PTA she'd start doing that, because I would not be prepared to continue if I couldn't plan properly.

Parents will probably not distinguish between the school raising funds and the PTA raising funds, it will all just be 'the school asking for money again'.
