Laptop will not connect to the internet - will not aquire network address

Can anyone help please. My laptop will not connect to the internet and so I cannot get emails in or anything. It tells me that it is onnected to the wireless network but it has a warning triangle at the over the wireless thingy on the botom (you can tell I am into all this techie stuff!!) and says 'limited or no connectivity'. I have tried to repair but it gets stuck on 'aquiring IP address' and then just bumps out and tells me that it cannot connect. The other laptop on the house is fine and I am sitting right next to the Virgin Media netgear box thing.

Any ideas on what the probem could be? Thanks.

I'll assume its worked in the past?
You could try --> start->RUN->type cmd and press enter
    then
    ipconfig /release
    then
    ipconfig /renew

    Do you have Zone Alarm?
Do you know about how it conflicts with the latest microsoft 'update'?

Thanks, yes, it has been fine up until today. We have just tried that and it says:

No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected.
An error occured while renewing interface Wireless Nertwork Connection : unable to contact you DHCP server. Request has timed out.

Thanks, I am not sure if i have it, how do I find out please? Sorry. The problems started after I did an update, 2 updates I think, I am on XP if this makes any difference. My friend mentioned something about an update problem she had with hers. My husband 'went back' 2 days today because of this was happening earlier and he thought he might be able to restore the PC to before the update but the same thing is happening.

OK, just looked through 'add remove programs' and there is no zone alarm, thought I might have downloaded it by mitak.

Thanks for he idead. My husband has put the encrption key in lots of times and that is not working either.

It is connected to the router but it is not downloading the settings from the router for some reason.

my friend had this on his laptop, he deleted and then recreated the connection and it cured the problem for him.

Many thanks guys, somehow it is connected now. It did some sort of update and suddenly shut down and restarted itself. We turned the wireless box off and on and either way it now works.

Damn things. Can't live without them can you!!

    Thanks again. x
