Renovating a painted brick fireplace surround

Hi All,

I have an ugly painted brick fireplace in my living room that I would like to beautify.
Does anyone have experience or ideas that I can use?

The bricks are a red colour and completely stand out in the my neutral-white room.

Can I colour the bricks without painting over them?

I can't see that you can avoid painting over them if you want to change the colour. Removing the paint will be a nightmare and you rarely get a 100% result.

I'd be inclined to plaster over them if you don't want to paint them.
