Hi, The "power" switch is a soft, logic only contact and gives a momentary pulse to the psu, via a single green wire to earth, to turn on the power. Now this "on" switch may be stuck in, or not making a connection to the motherboard, because it has "fell off" or been moved from it place on the board. I would take a look.0

yea as you can see i'm only an occasional visitor..
and 'totalsolutions'. thanks for that. when i'm home i'm gonna go take a look at the insides of my pc and see can i find out what has happened. i'm here at a friends house on a laptop that keeps bombing out cos it's overheating.. is it me??? lol.

and oh, marty j, thanks for that link. i was reading the tips just now at the bottom and it said if your power supply is dying there might be an annoying hi pitch noise out of it sometimes.. now that i think of it i did get that a few times in recent months, but not all the time, maybe once a week, i just restarted and it was gone. couldnt say for sure where it was coming from, just the general direction of the desktop.....
but it also says when it goes it can take the motherboard and other components with it when it blows. so here's crossing fingers.0 -
hi. update. i took it to pc world, and they have just phoned me to say it's the main board, and that my hard drive will be ok, but it'll be more expensive to fix. bout 130 euro.
