VAT on ebay?

Hi,
Sorry if this is a FAQ, but the search didn't seem to find anything.
There's an item I want to buy, which is being sold by a company with over 1000 feedback at 98.9%.
In the listing it says they will add VAT at 17.5% to the final cost (its an auction - not Buy it now).
I'm confused because I've never noticed any other listing say anything about VAT. Is this OK by ebays terms and conditions? I notice in the Help pages it says you can add VAT as long as you state it and what percentage it is in the listing. So does that mean it could be used to avoid ebay fees?
Does it ring any alarm bells with anybody?
Thanks,
Jonny

If a company is VAT registered then they can add VAT to the final price. It isn't usual but it isn't against any rules either.
If you wanted to be entirely sure ask them for their VAT reg number.
Also, 98.9% feedback may warrant a read of the last few pages, even the positives. Just make sure there aren't any major problems outlined.

And remember that VAT will be charged on the postage cost as well.0

VAT registered companies selling to the general public are obliged under advertising laws to advertise their goods including VAT, but there are exceptions - especially auctions.0
