Shouldn't September hols be cheaper than August?!

Hi all!

Longtime lurker but newbie poster here who also happens to be pretty skint!

We're trying to find cheapy hols to Olu Deniz in Turkey for around 2nd week in September but so far all the deals I've found have been £100-150 more expensive than for the same deal in August. I've never booked a late deal before so is it just that it's too far in advance to get a good price yet or have I missed something here?! I thought once the school hols were over the prices would be cheaper but maybe I'm just being an ignoramus!:rolleyes:

Can anyone in the know shed any light?

I normally leave it until 3-4 weeks out - ok as long you don't want to go to a specific hotel or resort (or sometimes even country...). Travel companies willl hang on at brochure prices until things start to look a bit empty or they need a few quid (they are in business to make a profit after all) - bit like playing chicken really.

Have you had a look at the Teletext website - they often throw up some decent deals.

Spain, Turkey and some other european places give their kids a longer school break so when our kids go back they still have holidays. Not sure what dates your trying but maybe try the end. thompsonfly.com have good deals for the whole of October if you can hold out that long.

Unfortunately we can't go until 5th September at the earliest and would rather go sometime between then and about the 15th. October's getting a bit late for us I'm afraid and we already have things on then and try not to plan too much in any one month for the pennies' sake!

I've been checking out teletext and a lot of other sites, but like I said, whereas we could have got a week 3* B&B to a well-rated hotel in Olu Deniz on 28 August for £270pp inc flights and transfers, the very same package in September was coming up £100 more expensive. There's only a couple of hotels in the resort that seem to have bad reviews, so we're not very fussy about which hotel we stay at but we'd ideally like to spend no more than £250 each.

I normally book all our holidays independently, but the flights to Turkey from Glasgow are min £270 alone and of course flights everywhere for the summer months are shooting up! The reason we're in this late pickle is that our (practically free) quiet holiday plans have fallen through so we hadn't been putting aside well in advance as we normally do for our hols. (

Anyway, sorry for going on too much - just very much feeling the need for some sun and relaxation esp. with the rainy summer so far!

Once the school hols are over it stays busy for a while with those avoiding school hols but still wanting it hot - so prices don't necessarily go down immediately
