Completely different technologies. It's equivalent to seeing if you can play DVDs on a CD player. It's a next gen (now dead) optical disc format that uses a blue laser. DVD drives don't even have a blue laser in them so pretty much just physically impossible so the same goes for Blu Ray discs as well.

Just DVD's, what your player does is improve the resolution of normal dvd's for use on a HDTV
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

As Psycence says it's still only a DVD player and can only play DVDs. Upscaling is just that, it scales up the existing standard definition picture to appear high definition (although not quite). Not the same as the "HD DVD" technology format. Blu Ray uses similar technology (also a blue laser) but was a competing format by a different group of companies. It uses different standards (and if you really want to go into detail, slightly different aperture settings etc on the laser) although it was technically possible to make drives that played both it's not really economical. But that's a moot point since HD DVD is now completely dead and Blu Ray the successor to the optical disc medium.

But to reiterate a DVD player that upscales to HD is not the same as a HD DVD player. I admit it's confusing (and I've always been irked that the format was decided to be called "HD DVD" just because it got the backing of the DVD consortium). An upscaling DVD player is still just a DVD player (red/infrared laser) just with a bit more processing and an HDMI (high definition cable) socket on the back.
