Returning to UK after 10 months overseas - am I entitled to anything?

Hi all,

I am a UK citizen returning to the UK after 10 months spent overseas. In fact I will only be back briefly and then leaving again.

I am curious whether anyone can think of anything I might be entitled to - rebates etc. For instance is it possible to claim back the VAT on anything that I purchased in the UK before I left? Can anyone think of anything else I might be entitled to?

Depends where you are going and how much stuff is there, what you want to buy, also when you are going, what currency you are paid in and the exchange rate and interest rate changes and forecasts between now and then. If you are thinking of spending a lot of money to claim a big rebate perhaps call HMRC or browse https://www.hmrc.gov.uk

You might be entitled to some income tax back for the tax year 2007-2008 because your income tax free allowance is based on your annual income whilst in the UK BUT PAYE assumes you'll be working for a whole year
