Is there a free program that will enable me to rip the audio from my own (legally bought and paid for ) music dvds to mp3 so that I can play them in my car? All the ones I have found so far are demo only and only rip the first 5 minutes

    Hi
It's possible to rip the audio from DVDs using VLC media player.
When I do this I rip the audio as a (huge) WAV file then convert it to mp3 later.
It's tricky to use VLC for this, but if you're interested I can give instructions.
VLC is a free download from here:-http://www.videolan.org/

Or maybe somebody else will suggest a different method.;)

In the past I've used SmartRipper (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/smartripper.htm) to do this. I think that rips the track directly as ac3 (the DVD audio format) so you'll need a converter such as Headac3he (http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/showsoftware_headac3he_166.html) to turn it into MP3 or another audio format

Nowadays, I'd probably use Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) to rip the scene I want to AVI, then extract the audio in VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/). I know there are some commercial audio only rippers out there that do the job, but I'm not aware of any free 'one step' software.

Just an FYI, but circumventing the copy protection on a DVD is illegal; it doesn't matter that you legally purchased it.

I've done it myself (purely for personal use mind), and it's pretty unlikely the police are going to kick in your door, but you should be aware of it.

You could use Audacity to record the sound card output as you play the DVD on your comp.

the most basic way is to buy a phono to phono cable (a few £'s) and plug it from your speaker out to your mic in, turn the volume down low. not ideal but it works!

DVD Decrypter, in IFO mode, can extract just the audio from any part of it you like.

You'll then most likely have to re-encode the audio to something you can play in the car, either MP3 or plain old CDA.
