Getting credit at your new address - help!

Options
I am moving house in a couple of weeks to an unfurnished rented property from a furnished rented property. Obviously this requires getting hold of some basics like a bed, sofa, fridge etc. The first 2 I've managed to sort out with Homebase/Argos (buy one sofa get one free, woo hoo!) and they will deliver to the new address fine. Its just now I need to get a fridge. Shopping around, Littlewoods was best but they simply won't give me an account because I have no utility bill to prove I live there (well, I'm not moving in for a couple of weeks, hence me wanting to order now so I can have the fridge delivered in 10 working days!!) and they won't deliver to the new address if I set up an account at my present address as you can't do that for three months. They won't even allow me to pay for the thing on plastic (as apposed to a credit account) either as the card isn't registered at the delivery address. I'm not psycic but I can feel similar troubles coming on with other companies.... anyone know how to get around this stuff?

Buy the fridge and get it delivered to your old address before you move?

Alternatively wait until you have moved to order the fridge and just keep your milk etc outside the back door in a cool box.
  • It is much easier to disappear without trace from rented accomodation than from property which you own.
This is why you are coming up against this difficulty.
Can you borrow from a member of your family?

  • Cheers guys, I guess I'm just going to have to buy from somewhere else. Maybe Argos as they were so helpful with the bed and stuff. It just gets my goat that its just another thing to make moving house difficult!

Unfortunately, we know absolutely no-one the other end (new area) so borrowing stuff is out of the question :-(

you could change the registered credit card address before you move.

  • Could be a bit dodgy changing the address early, they might send post to the new address and the people in there now would have access to my account information
