Hi
I have just unwrapped my brand spanking ipod photo and want to know what is out there in terms of extras? Possibly software upgrades? ( I heard that yu can do something to make em louder too????)
Anything you guys can give me would be much appreciated.
Oh and has anyone used the Itrip transmitter in the car?? does it work okay is there any loss in sound quality?
Cheers

Rather than using iTunes look up EphPod and there's also a Winamp plugin, for transferring music to/from the iPod.
iPod Linux is another. I ran my 3G iPod in dual boot with it. It's still in quite an early state, but cool to have. I don't think it is yet compatible with newer iPods.
Think about getting a case. Maybe one of the "sock" type cases. I did have an iSkin but found it annoying, and once grit got under the rubber skin, it would grind into the iPod.
Better headphones may also be a consideration. Maybe a pair of Sennheiser X100's or Sure E2c's."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Download the latest iPod Updater. That will give you the latest firmware and 1.2 software.0

iPod Linux, as mentioned by wolfman, is one of the best software things you can get from the iPod. The Linux project is an ongoing thing and the guys on the Linux team are always adding new and cooler features. You can install Linux on your iPod and have it dual boot (so you can choose to boot up the normal iPod UI, or the Linux UI, whenever you start up your iPod). With Linux you can get lots of extra games and cool features such as voice recording and video playback on the iPod.
There's also a program called iPod Wizard which allows you to customise and change just about all the graphics found in your iPods UI. So for example, you could change the star rating system to have pictures of whatever, instead of stars. You can also change the font used in your iPods user interface from the standard Apple one, using the program.
The iTrip FM transmitter is a very popular accessory for the iPod. However, the quality you'll get through your car stereo will vary depending on the strength and emptiness (in other words, it shouldn't be in use) of the station you use. I've never used one, so i'm not sure what the quality is like. However, an alternative to the iTrip is some of the iPod cassette adaptors you can find. These tend to produce better quality sound, but your car will need to have a cassette player for you to use it.

can you do these hacks on ipod mini ?0

Yes, you can. Visit https://www.ipodlinux.org for a list of compatible iPods (which i think is all but the 5G, and perhaps the iPod nano), and for instructions on installing Linux. iPod Wizard also works on the mini, but obviously its use won't be as great because of the mini's lack of a colour screen.0

The iTrip - while a lovely invention, due to its nature is quite poor quality.
If you're listening to anything with any bass at all, forget it. Anything that needs clarity to listen to, forget it.
Probably the closest thing you can do to see what it sounds like, put socks over your ears, listen to a radio station.

Just a quick note. The iTrip is illegal to use in the UK. You need a licence to broadcast on FM so by using an iTrip you are effectively breaking the law.
It would be hard for this to be enforced but still worth noting. You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.0
