VOIP/Skype on Dialup

Just wondered if anyone has used Skype or similar just using a dial up internet account and if it worked ok? The reason for asking is my parents have recenlty moved to France but the village they are in doesn't have broadband.

I think it comes down to the speed of the connection.

When I was on a 300Kb/sec Broadband connection the speech broke up on Voipcheap, XTen and Firefly. After I upgraded to a 1MB connection all was fine.

I dont think a 56k dial up has the bandwith, I have a 1MB connection and its tolerable, when I get the upgrade to 4MB it should be good.

The other point is contactability, you can leave a voicemail when people are offline, but to receive calls they'll need to have pre-agreed times when their online.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Agreeing a time to go online to talk isn't a problem, just wanted to know if we could use a dialup account to talk. I've got a 2MB connection so it should be ok from my end, but the village my parents have moved to only has 400 residents and no broadband yet.

About Skype and other voice messengers (e.g. YIM, AIM...)
I think the quality is acceptable. Sometimes, it breaks up (but not often)

Of course, you couldn't compare it to the quality of the broadband, but it is fine. I used to use it to talk with my friend and family from my country where they only have dial-up connections.

I haven't tested VOIP on dial-up yet. I have no idea.
