Refund on a card I don't have anymore...

This has probbaly been asked before.. so sorry in advance...

basically, for various reasons I'm getting a refund (not very big, but still nice to have) from a company I once dealt with.. now, due to the way they work, the refund will be paid back via the card I used to pay them.. now, the problem is, I cancelled that particular card about eight months back.. so, how do I get the money back? Does the card provider send me a cheque? Or does it just stay in limbo? I used to pay the card bill in cash... so no direct debit was set up... can anyone help? cheers...

Have you contacted the merchant? Explain the situation and they may be able to refund it onto a new card. If they can't do that, a cheque could be sent.
  • you need to appeal to the merchant...

the reason they only refund back to the same card is some Money Laundering malarky.. Can see exactly why they do this

However, you cant be the first person its happened to so hopefully they'll be able to help...

I closed down a credit card about a year ago. Got a letter at the beginning of May that there was still an outstanding credit on the account that I overpaid that they wanted to refund as they were updating or something. I got in touch with my old account number and they refunded to my current account, and this is on an account that's been closed for donkeys! So even if the merchant do refund to original card it should still sit there and the card company can refund to the bank details you provide, or at least that's what happened with me!

My advice would be to try everything within your power to ensure that they DO NOT under any circumstances refund the money to a cancelled card. As I have already stated on another post, this happened to me with National Lottery winnings. They refunded to old, closed Abbey account (their error). Abbey say it never arrived and even if it did, it would have bounced back to the lottery, lottery say it didn't bounce back and they have a BACS code which they wouldn't have if Abbey hadn't accepted the payment. Neither will accept responsibility and refund my money and unfortunately, I left it too long before involving the ombudsman (didn't realise there was time limit) and now I have no chance of getting the money whatsoever. Act now, don't wait for the money to be sitting somewhere you can't access it with all involved washing their hands of it!
  • interesting.. the merchant says they can't do it any other way, despite me saying that i didn't have the card anymore... waiting to see at the mo.. but thanks everyone...
