Prepayment meter
We are moving house from a home with a normal meter where we are paying £70 a month, there is no debt. The house we are going to has a key meter and is with Eon. I have told British gas that we want to stay with them and that takes 6-8 weeks to change supplier. We then have to wait another 28 days before they will remove the prepayment meter.
I spoke to Eon and asked them to change the meter whilst we are with them but they said as a new customer I would have to wait 12 months anyway!!
Is this correct? Can I be forced to pay a higher tariff because I cant get the meter removed for at least 2 months?
At £70 a month direct debit I dread to imagine what it will cost prepayment
Thanks

Hi, didn't want to read and run.
I hate NPower's prepayment meters. There's myself, my OH and our son and on an average month, our electric is £80 ish. We are very careful and have energy saving bulbs everywhere.
If you are forced to stay on the meter, be very wary. Whenever they change the energy prices, they are meant to come and change the prices on the meter. Needless to say they never do this on time. The prices changed in January and they still haven't got around to it. The result of this is huge bills for the difference in addition to what you have already paid. On christmas, the bill was £210, eek.
I want it out ASAP, although we have been with them for 3 years, i'm still expecting to be charged for the priviledge. NPower seem to do whatever they want when it comes to prepayment meters.0
