have you considered an external unit. it connects to the pc via a usb.
i have a liteon sohw 832sx which is an external dual layer and burns on - and + format discs. it has had good reviews. they also have an internal dvd writers
i think it has been replaced by SOHW-1673SXProblem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems
Well at least i learn something on the way

Good place to look is ebuyer
It's the same procedure for installing a cd drive, just set it to slave (SL) if your sharing a cable or master (MS) if it on it's own.
If it say's OEM you wwon't get any cd/dvd writing software included but is a few quid cheaper. you'll need some writing software like nero or easy cd creator.0 -
Thanks for replys will have a look at ebuyer.
Never considered an external unit bet they cost alot more but will take a look at them as well.0 -
i'd go for the retail pack. my liteon came with nero dvd/cd burning software. an external unit will probably cost around 20 pounds more i guess. best thing is to compare. ever manufacturer has an internal unit and external unit. they are the same dvd burners but with external it is in a case and you get a power adaptor as well.
i found external very useful because i can unplug it and take it to my sisters and copy information from her pc.

30 quid will get you a decent one, https://www.121cdr.co.uk or https://www.bigpockets.co.uk should see you ok.
if just replacing what you got just take old thing out and plug in new one, if adding to cd/dvd player already there then as mentioned, dont forget to change the jumpers ( the little plastic thing on the back of the dvdrw) to the settings pictured.
bear in mind though that dual layer disks are still expensive, if you already have copying software then go for the OEM version it comes without the box and software but most is free to download on trial anyway. and if you go for the latest pioneer 110 you will need to update your copying software as the machine is too new for some software.what is the plural of moose?

Have a look at the BenQ DW1640, it's a very solid drive and one of the best unless you can afford one of the Plextor's.
For slightly older drives (ie released early in the year) the LG GSA4163 is probably the best drive and retails at around £30. The NEC 3520 is also very good.
More recent version of the LG (4167?) and the NEC (3540) haven't lived up to their predecessors though. The LG GSA4163 or Benq DQ1640, don't think you could go wrong with either of those two.
The Liteons are meant to be very good to, although I've not used or read about them so can't really say.
https://www.microdirect.co.uk is a good place to look."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
I think am going for a internal unit, so am taking out my cd drive and putting in the dvd writer, so will I just conect it up the same.
Thanks.....0 -
The Liteon CD writers are good but their DVD writers are not so hot.
Consider the new NEC 4550 (also supports DVD-RAM)Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:
