Are you using the latest version of iTunes (7.7)?

I'm pretty sure it's required for the new iPhone.

let me give people some hints and tips of where to find the latest news for apple related things..

engadget.com have a nice story about the iphone activation servers being down.

macrumors.com have a similar story, with a forum of loads of people across the world with the same issues..

get across onto those websites, and you'll see lots of people are having issues...

If the OP has their iPhone at home, I'd assume that they have already activated it (in which case Apple's activation server being down wouldn't be an issue), or they would have been sent home with it without having activated it, in which case they would surely know why it wasn't working yet.

I have upgraded itunes but i think there it is a combination between a problem with the servers and that my phone wasn't activated when I bought it. i guess once i'd signed the new contract they weren't too bothered about me taking it home and unlocking it as they would still get my money.

it is just very annoying but at least i don't have an alternative phone. apparently some of the older iphones have been rendered inoperable after the latest software update. i guess i'll just have to sit and wait until the servers recover.

Indeed. I just wonder if apple are going to get this sorted so that I have a working iphone by tomorrow. I've upgraded so i have to keep swapping sims between my old phone and the new one to check if i can activate it yet. serves me right I guess, I should just have waited until tomorrow but I thought I'd be efficient instead.

    my story..

o2 dewsbury, get there early at 7.30, 8th in line. 6, 16gb iphones, in black, were snapped up in seconds, at 7.40am, as they came out and allocated cards to everyone, for the stock..

    drive to wakefield

get to wakefield, hang around and wait... 9th line, and again, only 6, 16gb black iphones... read on macrumors, that the regent street store has the white ones.... decide against a 8gb, and drive to meadowhall, sheffield..

get to Apple Store, at 9.40am.. Queue only about 10 long for people that are waiting... o2 systems have crashed!

!!!! around, reading newspapers, playing on the computers and guitar hero, (awesome!) and at 1.15pm, o2 are going to call the store, and go on a manual basis so we can leave with our iphones..

3 pm rolls round, and no sign of these phone calls..

4.20pm, a phone call comes through, woohoo.. i'm 2nd in line for actually going via the manual method, as 2 people have walked out with iphones, sneaking in the spaces where the o2 system actually worked...

4.40pm, i have my iphone in a bag, i have a receipt emailed to me, and I can actually leave the store.... it feels so odd.. i'd been there all bluddy day!!!

    get home, activation not working...

i got bored of trying, so had a little nap...

i think i got my nice shiny white 16gb one activated at about 8.40pm.. my first attempt after my nap!

just synching all my music to it... :)

pity the sim card that o2 supplied me with does nothing right now... that'll take a couple of days to get working!

was it all worth it... oh yeah!

    Early adopters...

i love Apple kit. But after the fiasco of Mac OS 10.5 - which it took Apple a full four months to get into a tolerable state of functionality after releasing it - I'm never going to buy another new Apple product again until it's reliably reported to be working properly.

By chance, I happened to be in Lower Regent Street yesterday afternoon with an hour to spare, so I thought I'd pop into the Apple Store and see if there was any helpful advice to had about the switch from .Mac to MobileMe.

I arrived there, only to find twenty or so bouncers in pale blue T-shirts hanging around the entrance, beneath a rather tatty-looking flag with an Apple logo on it.

    "Can I help you, sir?"

"Yes, you can get out of my way - I want to go in and buy something."

    "Is it an iPhone?"

    "No, it's a computer."

"I'm afraid we're only open for iPhones, today, sir."

    "What do you mean?"

"I'm sorry, sir. We're closed for everything except iPhones, today"

"What???" "This is Apple's flagship store. People come here from all over the country to buy Apple computer kit and you aren't selling it on a Friday afternoon?"

"If there's something specific that you want, I can send somebody in to get it for you, sir."

"You're saying that if I want to buy a £3,500 Apple computer I can't come into the store because you're only selling cheap plastic 'phones with a useless 2MP camera, a sealed-in battery and no memory expansion slot? But you can send in somebody to bring out a £3,500 computer in a sealed box and then sell it to me in the street??"

"That's the way it is, today, sir."

Rather than reply with something seriously (and deservedly) ripe, I just walked off. On the way home I picked up the evening 'paper. There was a large article in it about how people had queued all night outside the place to buy an iPhone, only to find that when they finally got their hands on one the entire system was so overloaded that they couldn't activate the thing.

Will somebody tell me what on earth was wrong with just waiting until next week?

Most of them probably had an iPhone already.

    Early adopters... :wall:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.
