Options for a broken boiler
I have an Ideal boiler which broke yesterday – the power light is lit, but the LED display isn’t coming on and the boiler doesn’t fire up so there’s no hot water/heating. It definitely seems kaput
I haven’t called an engineer yet but from looking on Google it will need a replacement PCB which is likely to cost £250+ to fit.
I already have a boiler service booked for next week which I presume will be pretty pointless as the boiler isn’t working
I can see three options that are open to me:
I call an engineer now and pay the cost of repair and make sure I get covered for any future problems
I let the engineer turn up for the service next week and ask them what the cost of a repair will be.
I take out boiler cover now and do without hot water/heating until the policy starts (about 30 days) – does this actually work or will they call to service the boiler prior to the policy commencing. (I can arrange showers at friends houses in the meantime)
I really need help with this one – what’s the most logical & economical solution – what would you do ?
Thanks in advance

Have u considered an Exchange PCB? It's normally a lot less than cost of a new PCB. Try searching on 'Ideal PCB' on eBay.
BG HomeCare T&C quote they normally try to inspect the boiler within 28 days of contract commencement so they could well decline the cover if the engineer finds a problem. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1026067
BG also do one off repairs for fixed price for under £200 (based on my postcode) fwiw. Visit www.house.co.uk0 -
Hey Fuji,
I have an Ideal Minimiser SE and get this often. If the boiler "clicks" but teh orange light doesn't come on, or comes on for a few seconds then with mine it was just all scaled up inside. Cost me £40 for a local guy to come and clean it out, although he said the Ideal is not "Ideal" and it'd happen again.0 -

how about getting a woodburning stove for the lounge, electric blanket for the bedroom
always amazes me that people heat their entire 100+ tonne house when its only 100 kg of them that need to be warm. seems there is a saving of 99.9% there straight away. electric trousers anyone? No Unapproved or Personal links in signatures please - FT30 -

I know with British Gas you get a initial maintenance and safety and initial fault inspection before the contract starts. However they do have another offer regarding this. You could have the initial fault fixed and still be covered. The cost would be added to your monthly payment allowing one year to pay it back. After one year your DD would reduce back to the original amount....£17 p/m, about £19p/m in London areas0 -
£17 p/m is assuming you have the whole central heating system covered. £13 p/m if its just boiler cover0

Get someone competent to chage the board. someone at work did this last week for around £70.Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:0
