Fallen ill before holiday! Protection on Visa Debit?

Hi guys,
Three of us were due to fly out to thailand in a week. Today, I am confirmed that one of my friends have glandular fever and cannot go on holiday.
I booked the three flights on my visa electron debit card; I was wondering if I have any sort of protection for these circumstances?
If not what is the best way to deal with the situation? Can I expect any money back in one way or another?
I feel terrible for my friend and it's just the worst luck ever..
P.S. Is it too late to get holiday insurance and attempt to claim on it?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Martin

Yes, it is too late to take out travel insurance. I can't believe you would book flights and consider travelling to somewhere like Thailand without it.
Unless your bank account has travel insurance with it, your card offers no protection.
Contact the airline, see if the flights are refundable (unlikely) or allow changes.Gone ... or have I?0 -
Hi Martin,
It is bad luck, but it's also bad planning because all of you should have taken travel insurance when you booked.
Unless you have any free travel cover with your card (or via your employer) then unfortunately you're stuck.
My employer extends their business cover for holidays but I think that's unusual (still might be worth checking these things out).
You could see if you cancel the flight or maybe try to sell it on and get the flight transferred to someone else. Do you have any other friends that could go instead? Even if they travelled half price you'd get some of the money back.0
