I just don't sorry (feel compasionate). Everyone loses people they love. They don't all buy BMWs. I earn probably a bit more than her. I don't have kids and I drive a P reg renault clio with a glove box that falls off.

And yea morg...... nice spot on the 3 youngest kids in priv edu and one of them can't have been in education when dad dies - so what's the score with 'changing' schools....

The youngest starting in private 5 yrs after dad died just goes to show she how she has not adjusted to her new reality. The other kids were in private so she thought the youngest one was entitled to be too when the time came even though things must have started to look tight by then. She probably used to drive a nice BMW when hubby was alive; once it started looking a bit battered she thought she was entitled to a similar quality one (maybe bought it 2nd hand as a concession). When she downsized originally, she at least started doing the right thing but then spent £90k on doing it up. All her friends are probably like she was before hubby died and she still wants to keep up with them; can't stand the shame of driving a Ford focus; having a shabbby house; or the kids going to the local state school, or having to share bedrooms.

We're going to see it all over. People think they are entitled to a certain way of life and just aren't willing to change, whether because of a death of a breadwinner, or credit crunch, job loss, whatever. The stupid london papers have had articles about how to save money during the credit crunch. They say things like "Buy wine from a wine warehouse instead of Threshers"... I say "don't buy wine at all, drink tap water". They say "Buy a £400 designer coat with a classic design, it'll last you a good few seasons". I say "Buy a plain black £25 coat from BHS, it'll last you years if you look after it". I'm so glad I'm not one of the muppets that actually believes the tripe they come out with.

Reality world is a lot different from Fantasy World where you fantasise that you can afford anything, just because you want it.

Indeed - but thanks to easy credit many people have indeed been 'living the dream'.

Living beyond one's means for years -> living below one's means for many more years while the debts are being repaid with interest....

The attitude that available credit=actual cash to your name has been prevalent for so many years now that, as consumer credit starts to run out as it inevitably will, I predict a riot.

You know, outside of MSE there are a lot of people who have no clue about anything financial or the housing market. I mean just look at the repeated posts on the house board saying "FTB - is it a good time to buy?". How can these people learn if all their friends and families are similarly "ignorant" (that word has negative connotations but I just mean it literally) and they think they have no reason to seek advice?

There are three FTBers all crowding into this one thread asking for advice:
