Fish oil for children

Just thought I would mention that if you are giving or intend to give your children fish oil capsules then you know that they cost a fortune.
(They are meant to help your child concentrate, so they do better at school...Brain food)

Currently most are £3.99 for 30 (Haliborange and Tesco's etc) and if you look on the packet you have to give your kids two for the daily dose.So will last you only 15 days per tub.
The adult ones are cheaper but only suitable for over 12 's

But today I am very pleased as I have found that Superdrug sell there own brand for £1.49 and the dose is 1 per day :j .

A bit of a bargain for me as I have 3 children I give them to and so will save quite a bit.

HTH someone else.

  • Perhaps you haven't seen the Omega3 threads in the Health forum. For some time I have been suggesting folks try ZIPVIT Omega Juice This has an EPA content of 900mg and a DHA content of 600 so a total omega content of 1.5g per 5 ml. The Durham Trial used 550mg EPA so you could get away with just half a teaspoon of Omega Juice bringing the daily cost per day to 3.5p. As it is £4.95 for 360ml. However taking slightly more that the minimum dose will do no harm.

It is the EPA+DHA content which you are wanting and it would be helpful to others if you could post back these figures from the Superdrug capsules and how many are in a tub.

Hi Ted , No I havn't seen the omega 3 thread but will have a good look now as very interested in this .

Right looking at the tub you get 30 for £1.49 and the nutritional info is as follows
    fish oil 211 mg
    providing omega 3 105mg
    providing EPA 54mg
    DHA 37mg
    Evening Primrose Oil 65mg
    providing GLA 6 mg
    and then added vit A,D,E

I suppose this means not nearly as good as the liquid stuff but then my kids will not take the stuff in liquid form.I have to chase them round the kitchen .
I can see from all the packets there is no RDA for fish oils for kids so how are you meant to know how much to give them ?

Currently give my 2 and 4 year olds the liquid stuff from Boots. Been 3 for 2 recently so stocked up. Have Orange and Strawberry flavours in my cupboard right now. They can't get enough of the stuff.

    I've been Money Tipped!
However, ZIPVIT also have a minimum age on them.

I've deleted my email from them, but I remember my 1 year old would have to wait a long time before he got Zipvit juice. Probably H + S gone mad, but I didn't feel it was worth the risk.

Boots are still the only people I've found who do fish oil for under 3s.
Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

My daughter physically retches with the stuff :)
I have to stick a Smartie on it (rather naughty methinks - improve her concentration and waistband at the same time) :D

My 6 year old takes the Omega juice no problem, and reminds me on a morning when I forget to give him it.

I tried it though, and I wanted to retch :o
Here I go again on my own....

Boots are currently doing 3 for 2 on all vitamins (their infant fish oil capsules count!) - I can't remember the name but they are in a rectangular pink/silvery box and it was 1 a day, 30 in a box I think for 9.99. Expensive but on offer...so cheaper.

I mix the capsule in with my daughter's porridge. Smells horrible to me, but she doesn't know fishy-banana porridge isn't the norm!
