Yep, I think I misunderstood that in my first response. So it may well be worth a try to get an upgrade with handset

I dont know if it helps but there are thousands of mobiles for sale on ebay and most unlocked so that they work on any network and also if you are forced to have to stay on PAYG then have a look round from time to time as most of the networks are doing free sim deals offering all kinds of offers if you say put £10 on your mobile a month in fact i just got a good one with Orange.

H and I went BR in Feb this year. I had my contract with Orange but H was on PAYG and was spending a silly amount each month so decided to try for a contract phone.
Amazingly, he was accepted by Virgin  We were both stunned....... I mean, there is NO way he could have passed a credit check, so whether they didn't do one, or they did and ignored the fact that he failed, we just don't know
Anyway, might be worth trying them

I had a 30 day sim with o2 and my credit rating took a bit of a bash but when I called them and asked to upgrade to a mobile (the £35 tariff like you said) they did it with no problems. Because you are already a customer and actually on a contract (albeit a month to month one) you'll find they won't credit check you again....worth trying!!
Just a little tip with it- my mother did this earlier this month she was also on a month to month sim she called and spoke to the cancellation dept and asked what the procedure was to cancel as she wanted a new mobile and was going to go in to town and compare prices - on the spot o2 offered her 600 mins, 1000 texts for £20 a month...so worth you having a try!!0 -
The mobile phone situation has changed dramatically over the last couple of years. We all have one. BR 2006, kept contract out of BR, never had a prob renewing and lately changing supplier. They are desperate for our business. Worth atry at least. Good luck0

Hi,
We were declared B/R in Apr 2004 & discharged Dec 2004 and tried for ages to get phone contract, eventually the only one we were accepted for was with T Mobile for 18 months which is up in Oct this year. Tried today to get Orange contract (through Quidco as they are offering £150 cash back with each new contract) and was refused at the first hurdle. So although we have a mortgage & credit card we can't get a new phone contract!!
With all the different replies you've had and how people have got various contracts and tarrifs I really don't understand how most of the companies decide who can & who can't.
They say lifes a mystery but I think it's even more so when you are or have been bankrupt!!!!!
Best of luck

I have a contract with O2. When I was declared bankrupt, I contacted O2 to see about getting it changed to PAYG, but keeping the same number. They told me that, as I had had the contract for so long they would rather keep me as a contract customer and gave me a 'loyalty bonus' of £75, credited to my account, and changed the contract to a 'discount 100' contract which gives me 100 free minutes a month for £8.50 a month. I did not have to go on a direct debit payment scheme - I simply ring the freephone number every month and pay the £8.50 on my wife's debit card. With their 'bonus' credit, it was almost a year before I had to pay anything.
I am not particularily interested in 'gimmicks' and use my phone to make and receive calls - plain and simple - so the Nokia 6310i phone that I had, at the time, was fine, if a bit dated. Last month, I went into the local O2 shop and just asked if I was eligible for any upgrade. Initially the 'computer' said no - but the manager rang O2 customer services and I got a free upgrade to the Nokia 6500 with no change in contract or payment terms.
It is, therefore, always worth a try talking to O2 customer services.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
