After no end of problems with the main computer crawling along and broken connections, we contacted our ISP who tested our line etc everything proved fine according to them, they advised us to contact the router manufacturer. Links's were most helpful and tried no end of tests and settings. Still no luck, they advised us to try another router.
This we did with the same result. We even resorted to reformatting the main PC. We are at a total loss as to what to do now, PLEASE could someone help?

The laptop is connecting at download speed: 5737 Up. 373 ping 56 the PC is only getting: " " 0384 382

We both have XP Pro, IE, Avast
If you need anymore info please ask.
Thank you

Not sure exactly what your problem is here. Is YOUR laptop "stealing" bandwidth, or is someone stealing bandwidth from you ?

Hi Anthony, I think its my laptop that is stealing bandwidth (IF that is possible!) The reason I say that is that the laptop is working just fine with good download speeds, but the main PC connected to the router with wired connection can hardly access the web.
We do have a secured connection, and by the way the laptop is wireless.

Unless your laptop is permanently downloading without any break whatsoever, it has no effect on the desktop. Sounds more like an issue with the desktop. Does the desktop get good speeds when the laptop is turned off?

All Conors points are valid. Its more than likely your desktop that is riddled with viruses and stealing the bandwidth. Put some anti-virus software on it and anti-spyware and get it cleaned up a bit more. See how that affects things.

I think you should make a new topic for that. Your not going to get many replies in here. But if I were you I would ring them back and tell them that its back and you want a new modem.

Thank you all for the help. I THINK!! we have come to the conclusion that it is the LAN card on the main PC that is the problem, but don't know how to fix it:confused: The main PC has been freshly reformatted and we have all the anti virus, firewall, and spybot, adaware ect and the PC is completely clean. If anyone has any idea on what we could do re. the Lan card, we would be very grateful:o

If I remember rightly, if you look at the LAN card, on part of the board it should tell you what the maximum speed of it is. If it's less than 100mbps then that could be your problem.

You should be able to pick up a new one quite cheaply from the web with a higher speed.

I don't think it would limit the OP's speeds that much though, even if it was only working at 10 Mbps.

10 Mbps = approx. 5 Mbps "usable" bandwidth (at least,) so approx 5000 kbps, when they say they're only getting 384 kbps.

Tried updating the LAN card drivers? Try a different network cable? You never know.

And make sure you don't have iPlayer (or any auto--running p2p progs, for that matter,) installed, because that will def. steal your bandwidth.

Just thought I would let you all know that in desperation more than anything else, after reading about the problems with Windows update and Zone Alarm, (although I do NOT have it installed) I uninstalled the update.
Guess what, the computer is flying along again, a POX on Microsoft messing up peoples computers and wasting precious time. I wonder just how many others are going through the same sort of problems?
